Chernobyl Series
Chernobyl Series is an art project that started with a desire to travel into the future. During my walks in the forests of Western Norway, I've pondered whether our perception of time is an illusion compared to the environment around us.
We experience the forest as quiet and static, but in reality, the forest and nature are in constant and rapid change. A force that is unstoppable. The power of nature.
What will happen to our cities and what we perceive as eternal monuments of our civilization if humans disappear? A place where exactly this has happened is Chernobyl, Ukraine.
The Chernobyl accident on August 26, 1986, is one of the world's worst nuclear disasters and has rendered a large area, including the neighboring town of Prypiat, uninhabitable for thousands of years into the future.
The accident will forever stand as one of the worst examples of human arrogance. Our cities, our infrastructure, and all our signs of civilization that we consider monuments for eternity are erased within decades.
In under 40 years, trees effortlessly grow on top of 10-story buildings and through concrete. All roads are replaced with dense forests. Every single drop of rain contributes to transforming the city into dust.
For a long time, humans were an insignificant species on Earth, low on the food chain. We did not know arrogance.
Perhaps we should remember that time.
